Michael brings a deep understanding of the joys and demands of ministry to his work supporting those called to serve. In this Q&A, he reflects on the importance of nurturing well-being, staying grounded in purpose, and finding renewal throughout the many seasons of a life in ministry.
How does CREDO help ministers address real-world challenges?
CREDO is a weeklong conference focused on wholeness in life and leadership for ministers. We consider areas of vocation, spirituality, finances, and physical and emotional health. We know that ministers want to flourish in life and ministry — and are often isolated and busy. Helping them build relationships with other ministers and setting (or resetting) healthy rhythms of work, rest, play, and prayer — these can be game changers in flourishing!
How does your role support ministers in their ministry?
In my role, I’m designing programs to support ministers through the arc of their ministry — from ordination to retirement. Part of that is expanding the availability of CREDO so that ministers can participate multiple times during their careers. The other part is developing additional programs to help them build their capacities for resilience and creativity in life and leadership. We want our ministers to thrive, and the Board of Pensions believes in them and is here to support them.
What do you most look forward to helping ministers with in your role?
I spent 20 years in pastoral ministry and then 10 years in mid council ministry. Along the way I’ve taught polity and leadership at two seminaries. I love congregations and believe they are crucial as they bear witness to God’s grace in Jesus Christ. Because of this, I believe in the work of ministers and I know that it is both incredibly rewarding and incredibly demanding. Being a pastor (or a minister in another call) is intense! I look forward to supporting ministers so that they can flourish in life and ministry.
Three types of CREDO conferences are offered each year, designed to support wholeness in ministry. Invitations are extended to eligible participants, with registration details typically shared in mid‑August.
