Consider a simplified approach to investing with target date funds

January 13, 2022

Making investment decisions for your retirement savings can be complicated. Target date funds offer a straightforward solution.

The Retirement Savings Plan of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (RSP) offers a wide range of investment options, each with different levels of risk and return. If you don't have the time, expertise, or inclination to research, select, and monitor your investments, Fidelity Freedom Index Funds (also called target date funds) offer an easy and convenient solution that helps take the guesswork out of building and maintaining your retirement savings.

Fidelity's target date funds provide a single, simplified investment solution, designed to help you grow your retirement savings during your earning years and help provide income and stability through your retirement years. Each target date fund offers a mix of stocks, bonds, and other investments that automatically adjust and rebalance throughout your lifetime, becoming more conservative as the target date approaches.

A single fund solution

When you direct your Retirement Savings Plan contributions to a target date fund, you don't need to select any other investments. Simply choose the Fidelity Freedom Fund that most closely matches the year you plan to retire. If, for example, you plan to retire in 30 years, you would select the Fidelity Freedom Index 2050 Fund. Once you choose your fund, Fidelity manages diversification, asset allocation, and rebalancing for you, with your target retirement date in mind.

If your RSP savings are invested in more than one target date fund, consult a financial advisor to help determine whether this is the right investment approach for you. Earn 25 Call to Health points when you schedule a complimentary, virtual 1:1 consultation with a Fidelity workplace financial consultant. (Enter The Board of Pensions as the employer and select Virtual as the appointment type. Choose a date and time, then provide the requested information and click Schedule Appointment.)
