Preparing for the 2027 post-retirement medical and prescription drug coverage transition

The Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is honored to provide you with healthcare coverage during your retirement. As we previously announced, your Post-Retirement Medical Plan benefits will transition from the Humana Group Medicare Advantage PPO plan and the Humana Group Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) to medical coverage through the UnitedHealthcare Group Medicare Advantage PPO Plan (a passive PPO plan) with Part D prescription drug coverage through Express Scripts, effective Jan. 1, 2027.

We know that choosing healthcare is an important, personal decision, and that Medicare coverage choices can be complex. Please be assured that the Board of Pensions will walk alongside you throughout this change. We want to ensure that you and your loved ones know what to expect and the steps we’re taking to support you through the transition.

Key information about the transition

• The new coverage through UnitedHealthcare and Express Scripts closely aligns to what you have today, with a lower cap on the amount you will be required to pay out-of-pocket for covered prescription drugs in a calendar year.
• The majority of network providers under the current Humana plan are also network providers with UnitedHealthcare.
• Your premium cost will be $0 in 2027. While the actual premium cost of this coverage is $284 per member per month, the Board will continue subsidizing the premium costs for post-retirement medical coverage in 2027, keeping the four-year commitment to $0 monthly premium we made when we introduced the Humana plan in 2024.
• You’ll automatically be enrolled in the new plans — unless you choose to opt out and purchase other coverage on your own. If your spouse or eligible child is enrolled in the existing Humana plans, they also will be automatically enrolled in the new plans as of Jan. 1, 2027, unless they opt out.
• If you choose other coverage for 2027, you must be prepared to do so during the Medicare open enrollment period, Oct. 15–Dec. 7, 2026.

Upcoming information sessions

The Board will be hosting information sessions this fall with representatives from the new carriers so that you can learn more details of the plan. These sessions will be held Sept. 24, Sept. 29, and Oct. 1. Look for an email invitation next week when registration opens.
