Questions and answers about virtual events

Joining the Board of Pensions for a virtual event, such as an online meeting or webinar? Here are some helpful questions and answers to get the most out of the virtual event you’re attending and troubleshoot technical issues.

What platform does the Board of Pensions use for its virtual events?

We use Zoom Webinar or Zoom Meeting for many of our virtual events.

You can read about Zoom, its requirements, and how to download it before your virtual event. Once downloaded, you can test the Zoom application to ensure that it works properly on your device. Zoom is compatible with Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari web browsers.

If you are already a Zoom user, update to the most current version of Zoom before the webinar.

Can I connect from a mobile device?

Zoom is accessible on mobile devices. You can download the free Zoom app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Your experience on a mobile device will be slightly different than that on a computer, with a more limited range of features available to tailor your participation experience.

How can I adjust my settings on Zoom?

When you join one of our virtual events on a computer or laptop, you can adjust Zoom’s settings to your preference to enhance your event experience.

  • Change your audio settings by selecting the Audio Settings menu in the lower left corner of the main menu bar.
  • Turn on autogenerated captions using the Show Captions button, located in the center of the menu bar.
  • Use the View menu in the upper right corner of the screen and select from the options to change your viewing experience.

These options are also available in the Zoom mobile app, subject to user interface updates implemented by Zoom.

My video streaming is slow and I’m experiencing a bad connection. What can I do?

In general, if you’re connecting over wifi and experiencing a poor video connection, buffering, or other issues with video playback, try the following:

  • Disconnect from any networks and close all other applications on your computer.
  • Move your wireless router to a more central location of your home or to an elevated surface, or move your computer closer to the router.
  • Use a hardwired internet connection, if available.

I am having technical issues with Zoom, and I cannot join the virtual event. What do I do?

Refer to your virtual event confirmation or reminder emails for details on how to contact the meeting leaders for assistance.
