Prescription drug benefits

The prescription drug program, administered by Express Scripts, helps with the cost of medications prescribed to maintain or restore health, or to treat ongoing health conditions.

New pharmacy benefits ID card

Effective January 1, 2021, Express Scripts is the new pharmacy benefits manager for the prescription drug program for those with medical coverage through the Board of Pensions. Members will receive a welcome package from Express Scripts with a new ID card.

If you have not yet received your welcome package from Express Scripts with your new ID card, you can register and log on to the Express Scripts website to download and print an ID card. You can also use the Express Scripts mobile app to access a virtual ID card. Or, call Express Scripts at 800-344-3896 to request a new card. Retired members should call 877-856-4694.

How prescription drug benefits work

Prescription drug benefits are automatically included, at no additional cost, when you elect medical coverage through the Board of Pensions. In addition to coverage for generic and brand-name drugs, the prescription drug program features enhanced benefits for select preventive medications as well as special programs to help slow rising costs while providing you with safe and effective medications.

Your costs for covered prescription drugs

You share in the cost of medically necessary drugs for you and your enrolled family members. How much you pay for covered drugs varies depending on the medical option you’re enrolled in, the type of drug, and whether you fill your prescription at a retail pharmacy or through the plan’s mail-order service.

Using your prescription drug benefits

You can fill your prescriptions at participating retail pharmacies, or you can enjoy the convenience — and savings — of home delivery. You also have access to online tools through the Express Scripts website to help you manage your prescription drug costs.
