Three reasons it’s important to complete annual enrollment

September 18, 2020

Take advantage of annual enrollment for 2021 benefits to make sure you will have the coverage that best meets your needs.

This year’s annual enrollment for employees will be October 26 through November 13. While you may not give much thought to your benefits until you need them, it’s important to use this time to make sure you’ll have the coverage you want for 2021.

Here are three reasons everyone should complete annual enrollment.

  1. It serves as a yearly checkup for your benefits. Like many things in life, a little time and attention can go a long way toward making sure everything’s in good working order. Just like you test the smoke detectors in your home, see your doctor for an annual checkup, and take care of other important tasks, make it a point every year to review the benefits available to you and the costs — even if you want to keep the coverage you have now.
  2. It’s your only chance to review and elect benefits coverage for 2021. Once annual enrollment ends, you won’t have another opportunity to make changes to your coverage or elect new coverage until fall of 2021, for benefits effective January 1, 2022, unless you have a qualifying life event during the year.
  3. Things change. As the past six months have reminded us, circumstances change. Take a moment to review how your situation may have changed in the past year and how any changes may affect the benefits you want for 2021. For example, did you get married or divorced? If you’re married, has your spouse started a new job and now has access to their own benefits coverage? During annual enrollment, you can add or remove dependents from your coverage as needed, update your beneficiaries to make sure they reflect your current wishes, or change your address to make sure you don’t miss important mailings from the Board of Pensions.

With these reasons in mind, give your benefits the time and attention they deserve during annual enrollment. Get ready by logging on to Benefits Connect before annual enrollment starts to review your current benefits, as well as your enrolled family members and any beneficiary designations. (If you’re not yet registered for Benefits Connect, you will need to create a User Profile.)

Then, starting October 26, log on to review your 2021 choices and costs and make your elections by November 13, for coverage effective January 1.
