Regular dental care contributes to overall well-being

We’ve all heard the recommendation to brush our teeth three times a day, use dental floss, and get regular dental checkups. Following that advice can help you stay healthy and save money.

Good dental hygiene may contribute more to your overall health than you think, as brushing and flossing can lower your risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Regular dental checkups can lead to early detection of potentially serious medical conditions, as dentists look for signs of disease that you may be unaware of.

Routine dental care also helps reduce the overall cost of dental services for you and your family, since regular checkups lower the likelihood of major services, such as fillings, crowns, root canals, and oral surgery.

Coverage for preventive and diagnostic care

If offered by your employer, dental benefits through the Board of Pensions provide coverage for a wide range of services, including preventive and diagnostic care, basic and major restorative care, and orthodontia. Preventive care and diagnostic services (such as routine checkups, cleaning, and bitewing X-rays) are 100 percent covered.

If your employer offers dental coverage through the Board, but you are not enrolled, you’ll have the opportunity to elect coverage for yourself and eligible family members when annual enrollment begins on October 28.

Call to Health points available*

Taking care of your smile and seeing the dentist at least once a year is also worth 50 Call to Health points toward reduced medical deductibles in 2020. Visit calltohealth.org to join the Dental Exam challenge and record the date of your last checkup (on or after November 16, 2018). If you haven’t seen your dentist this year, be sure to schedule that on or before the Call to Health deadline (November 15).
