Program requirements

Healthy Pastors, Healthy Congregations brings a pastor and congregational leadership together to work toward financial sustainability by providing financial education and consultations to both the pastor and congregational leaders.

How to complete the program

Healthy Pastors, Healthy Congregations participants are required to complete the following to receive grant funds.

First, complete the following three items in any order:

  • Sign and return the Healthy Pastors, Healthy Congregations Program Covenant and Covenant of Financial Commitment. Signing these covenants commits the pastor, the congregation, and the Board of Pensions to take specific actions toward building a better financial future for the Church.
  • Contact your Board of Pensions Church Consultant to schedule a congregational leader training session. Email or call your Church Consultant to schedule a two-hour, in-person training session. This session helps congregational leaders better understand the financial realities of those who answer God’s call.
  • Register for e-learning courses. You can register through Benefits Connect for, and complete, two e-learning course series — Terms of Call and Personal Financial Planning — at any time.
    • Log on to Benefits Connect.
    • Choose Board University at the top of the page.
    • After clicking on Board University, you will be automatically directed to our learning management system.
    • Navigate to the Course Library.
    • Select the Healthy Pastors, Healthy Congregations Learning Path to begin the e-learning courses.

Next, consult with a financial professional from Ernst & Young Employee Financial Services (EY). An EY counselor will contact you directly to schedule counseling sessions. The counseling consists of two to three phone calls and requires an assessment by your EY counselor. This requirement results in a personalized financial plan. This EY financial planning benefit is offered by the Board of Pensions at no cost to participants and includes online tools and personal financial advising with a team of certified planners.

Finally, receive the grant application. The Healthy Pastors, Healthy Congregations program administrator will email you the application for grant funds. The grant may be applied to personal or student loan debt, or to the participant's Retirement Savings Plan account. If you decide to apply grant funds toward educational debt, a PeopleJoy Educational Debt Reduction Firm representative will contact you via email.
