Considerations for selecting benefits

When selecting benefits to offer for the next year, these considerations can help guide you in making the right choices for you and your employees.

Before submitting your Employer Agreement for the next year, review it to consider:

  • Who will be offered which benefits. Use criteria such as hours scheduled to work, length of service, or job types to determine who is eligible for coverage.
  • When coverage will take effect. Benefits may be effective when employees are first hired or after a waiting period (up to 90 days for medical coverage), as long as you comply with applicable laws.
  • How much you and employees will contribute to the cost of coverage.

You may select what benefits to offer each benefit group (based on Benefits Plan provisions) through menu options. Installed pastors must be enrolled in Pastor's Participation, a comprehensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of ministers and their families.

Ministers of the Word and Sacrament (other than installed pastors) regularly scheduled to work 20 hours or more weekly may be enrolled in Pastor's Participation or menu options. However, the Board urges you to enroll this group in Pastor's Participation and to apply your selection to all ministers working 20 or more hours weekly. Employees and ministers who are not in installed positions must be regularly scheduled to work at least 20 hours per week to be eligible for medical coverage under menu options (the 20-hour minimum does not apply to self-employed ministers in validated service).
