Eligibility

Your employer selects the benefits available to you based on the provisions of the plans and the guidelines provided by the Benefits Plan of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Menu options

  • Employees other than installed pastors may be offered any combination of the benefits shown in the chart below.
  • A regularly scheduled workweek of at least 20 hours is required to participate, except for the following:
    • dental coverage, vision eyewear coverage, the dependent care flexible spending account, and the Retirement Savings Plan
    • medical coverage for ministers in self-employed validated service

Pastor's Participation

  • Installed pastors must be enrolled in Pastor's Participation, which includes the coverage shown in the green box in the chart below. The employer pays 100 percent of the cost of the Pension Plan, death and disability benefits, and the PPO option of the Medical Plan. The Retirement Savings Plan must be offered.
  • Employers may choose to provide Pastor's Participation to any ministers who are regularly scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week. (The Board urges employers to provide benefits through Pastor's Participation to all ministers working 20 hours or more.)

This chart shows the benefits available under menu options and required in Pastor's Participation along with coverage costs. Percentage-based costs and the cost of group term life coverage must be fully paid by the employer. Your employer may ask you to contribute toward the cost of other benefits.

Dependents

You can add an eligible family member to Benefits Plan coverage during annual enrollment or within 60 days of a qualifying life event, such as marriage or the birth or adoption of a child.

Before finalizing the enrollment of an eligible family member, the Board of Pensions requires supporting documentation. When adding a dependent during annual enrollment, follow the instructions on Benefits Connect to submit the required documentation:

  • To enroll a spouse, submit a copy of the marriage certificate.
  • To enroll a child, submit a copy of the birth certificate or legal documentation for adoption and legal guardianship. For any children of your spouse, submit a copy of the birth certificate or legal documentation for adoption or legal guardianship listing your spouse as a parent/guardian.
