Beginning January 1, 2008, a three-year pilot program allows eligible pastors of small churches - those serving congregations of fewer than 200 members - to seek a stipend of up to $3,000 towards a sabbatical. Through the Sabbath Sabbatical Support Grant Program, the Board of Pensions provides up to 110 grants a year and administers them in cooperation with the middle governing bodies.

The program provides an opportunity for pastors serving small congregations to take time away from the demands of the job and engage in a period of personal and professional renewal. Sabbath sabbatical support grants are intended to supplement the financial aid of congregations, foundations, middle governing bodies, or other contributors.

Among other requirements, to qualify for a grant you must have served the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) as a pastor for at least ten years, have served your current congregation for at least six years, and be an active member of the Benefits Plan (Traditional Program).

For additional program details or to determine grant availability in your synod or presbytery, contact the representative for synod listed on the Sabbath Sabbatical Support Grant product sheet.
