There are many times when synod executives, presbytery executives, stated clerks, CPM and COM moderators, pension liaisons, and other Middle Governing Bodies (MGB) officials help members understand and take advantage of the various offerings of the Benefits Plan.
As part of the community of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Middle Governing Bodies share the responsibility for the needs of members and assist the Board of Pensions to meet those needs based on the abilities and resources of all.
“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of one body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. . . . God has so arranged the body . . . that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.” (1 Corinthians 12:12, 24-26 NRSV)
Enrollment & Dues
The help of the Middle Governing Bodies in enrolling members into the Benefits Plan, reporting effective salaries, and paying dues is instrumental to providing the best coverage for the entire community. MGB involvement is especially critical in the enrollment of seminary students and ministers of the Word and Sacrament, as well as cases of dues delinquency. more
Clergy Support
The Board of Pensions recognizes that pastors do work in isolation from one another and can, therefore, feel disconnected. There are many ways in which the Board can help. Clergy Colleague Groups build networks of mutual support among pastors within a presbytery, while the Assistance Program provides grants to support ministers in leadership development and in times of need. more
Additional Resources
The Board offers a number of educational programs that enhance members’ understanding of their finances, health, and Plan benefits. This section can also help MGB members learn about the need and use of verification letters, as well as the Regional Benefits Consultations, in which the Board presents changes to the Plan and listens to member concerns. more
