Ministers in Pastor’s Participation will automatically be enrolled in the new Temporary Disability Plan as of January 1. Learn about this valuable benefit.
Beginning January 1, 2021, ministers enrolled in the Pastor’s Participation benefits package will be automatically covered under the new Temporary Disability Plan, with no additional dues, or decrease in current benefits. This new benefit was approved by the Board of Directors of the Board of Pensions as announced in the Spring 2020 Board Bulletin.
This benefit fills a possible gap in coverage for many employees because of the 90-day waiting period before disability benefits in the Death and Disability Plan may begin. Many ministers — and employees — have reported that the three months without a paycheck is difficult to manage.
Temporary Disability Plan benefits can partially replace income during short-term absences from work because of sickness or injury that prevents a member from performing his or her regular job duties.
After a 14-day waiting period, the plan provides weekly income benefits to members temporarily unable to work for periods of up to 90 days. Generally, the benefit equals 60 percent of effective salary, up to $285,000.
Once enrolled, members may apply for benefits if they will be unable to work for at least 14 consecutive days as long as a physician certifies the disability and it is also certified by Lincoln Financial Group, the business partner that administers the plan for the Board of Pensions. For a planned absence such as elective surgery, members may apply up to 30 days before the first day of absence from work. For an unexpected absence that is anticipated to last longer than 14 days, members may apply for benefits at any time during the 14-day waiting period.
Members may apply for temporary disability benefits online or by phone directly through Lincoln. Temporary disability checks will be issued directly to the disabled member by Lincoln; direct deposit is encouraged.
