Motivate employees by creating a healthy workplace

May 10, 2019

Global Employee Health & Fitness Month encourages employers to motivate employees to adopt healthy, active lifestyles. Here are some steps you can take to support your employees.

Lack of time is one of the biggest reasons for not eating healthy or getting enough exercise. But how do people who spend a large part of their day working find time for health and fitness? The answer: It starts at work.

Global Employee Health & Fitness Month (GEHFM), observed in May, encourages employers to motivate employees to adopt healthy, active lifestyles. While the decision to live a healthy lifestyle is an individual choice, the larger implications for the workplace include happier, more engaged employees, lower rates of absenteeism, and improved productivity.

What you can do

Here are some simple things you can do as an employer to help create a healthy workplace.

  • Talk to your employees about the benefits of participating in Call to Health,* and remind anyone who hasn’t yet registered that when they sign up and complete the Well-Being Assessment, they’ll receive a $50 Tango card.
  • Encourage employees to organize healthy activities, such as a walking group, softball team, or healthy recipe-trading group.
  • Support employees in getting their preventive care by allowing time away from work for appointments.
  • Host a healthy luncheon, or make healthy snacks available in break rooms.
  • Be an example. Take a walk at lunchtime, park further from the door, or take the stairs instead of the elevator. If you’re eligible for Call to Health, participate and share your experiences with employees if you’re comfortable doing so. For inspiration, read stories from members who are living the call.
  • Promote the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) as a resource for employees to get information about exercise and nutrition. To access articles, videos, recipes, webinars, and more, log in to the EAP website and
    • select Coverage, then Employee Assistance Program (EAP);
    • click on the Work/Life Resources link under About Cigna’s EAP Services; and
    • select Thriving.

Whatever you do to observe GEHFM, keep in mind that healthy choices take time to develop into lasting habits. This month and throughout the year, take steps to make health and well-being part of every workday.

*The EAP and Call to Health are not available to members enrolled in Triple-S, GeoBlue, or the Medicare Supplement Plan.
