Becoming a Parent

When you expand your family through birth, adoption, or legal guardianship, the child(ren) are eligible to enroll for medical benefits and certain optional benefits. You may also wish to update your beneficiaries to reflect the addition to your family as well as review your other benefits coverage.

Reporting the Addition of a Child and Electing Benefits

Because birth, adoption, or legal guardianship is a qualifying life event, you have the opportunity to elect or change benefits for which you are eligible and/or add or remove eligible family members from coverage.

To elect or change benefits and/or coverage levels as a result of the new child, active members* must

  • report the birth, adoption, or legal guardianship online through Benefits Connect within 60 days after the birth, adoption, or guardianship date (from the home page, choose Life Events under About Me and follow the prompts); and
  • provide all required supporting documentation through Benefits Connect (e.g., birth certificate) within 60 days after the birth or effective date.

After you report the addition and provide required documentation, you will be able to return to Benefits Connect to elect/change available benefits and update beneficiaries, if applicable.

*Retired members should use the Life Event Change form to report a qualifying life event.

Coverage Effective Date

Coverage will be effective from the date of birth if you enroll your child within 60 days of that date. For adoptions and legal guardianships, coverage effective dates may vary. For information, call the Board of Pensions at 800-773-7752 (800-PRESPLAN) to speak with a representative.

If you do not enroll your child within 60 days of the child’s date of birth, you must wait until the next annual enrollment, generally in the fall, to elect coverage for the child(ren).

Update Your Beneficiary Information

You may want to update your beneficiary designations, through Benefits Connect, for the following:

  • salary continuation benefit and/or supplemental death benefits
  • Retirement Savings Plan of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

If you are a retired member, you may also want to change the number of your tax allowances. Log on to Benefits Connect to review your current withholdings. To make changes, download and complete a Tax Withholding Election form from pensions.org.

Enroll in Optional Benefits

Because it is considered a qualifying life event, within the first 60 days of birth, adoption, or legal guardianship, you can

  • enroll yourself and/or eligible family members in the Dental Plan;
  • apply for supplemental death coverage for yourself, your spouse, and /or your children (health statements will be required for you and/or your spouse if you apply after you are first eligible).
