Annual Enrollment Starts October 30

Annual enrollment through Benefits Connect starts Monday, October 30.

Eligible employees will receive a postcard in the mail at home with annual enrollment dates, deadlines, and actions to take. Detailed information and resources will be available on pensions.org when annual enrollment starts October 30. Two web tutorials in English, Spanish, and Korean outlining what employees need to know and do during annual enrollment are available now to help employees get ready for annual enrollment.

The deadline for making benefits elections is Friday, November 17. Once annual enrollment ends, employees will not be able to elect or change benefits coverage unless they have a qualifying life event during the year (for example, marriage or the birth or adoption of a child).

You should be prepared to answer questions from your employees about the benefits you have made available to them and the costs. If employees have questions about how their benefits work, they should contact the Board at 800-773-7752 (800-PRESPLAN).

New Features Aid Employers

During annual enrollment (October 30-November 17), you will be able to log on to Benefits Connect and see whether your employees have submitted their elections for 2018 coverage. Starting the first week of December, you also will have the ability to view employee elections and costs and download that information to a spreadsheet for 2018 payroll purposes.

Pastor's Participation Dues Calculator Now Available

Employers told the Board how helpful an online dues calculator was in estimating monthly and annual dues, and we listened. As a result of this valuable feedback, we have relaunched our Dues Calculator as the new Pastor’s Participation Dues Calculator on pensions.org.

Employers can now calculate monthly and annual dues (medical, pension, and death and disability) for those in Pastor’s Participation. Dues are based on the percentage of annual effective salary and minimums and maximums for the selected year, unless otherwise noted. Please keep in mind that final invoiced amounts may vary slightly due to rounding or proration of partial periods.

To help employers determine annual effective salary, the calculator also includes a link to Calculate Total Annual Effective Salary. Click on the link, complete the components of effective salary, and choose Calculate. Select Done, and the total will carry back to the calculator.

Visit pensions.org to give the new Pastor’s Participation Dues Calculator tool a try!

Encourage Employees To Review Retirement Savings Strategy Annually

During October and November, our financial well-being communications will focus on annual retirement savings checkups. It is important for employees to review their long-term savings strategies every year to be sure that contribution amounts and investment choices are keeping pace with life events and other changes.

Employees may not be aware of the resources that are available to them when they participate in the Retirement Savings Plan of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (RSP). Encourage them to read Are You Saving Enough for Retirement? on pensions.org for more information.

When talking with employees about the RSP, remember these key facts:

  • All PC(USA) employees are eligible to save in the RSP. Any employee receiving a W-2 from a
PC(USA) employer may join the RSP; please encourage employees to participate if they do not do so already.
  • Tax advantages can add to retirement savings. RSP participants can save the traditional pretax way and defer paying taxes now, and/or can contribute after-tax through the Roth option in exchange for favorable tax treatment later (subject to applicable tax rules).
  • There are additional tax advantages for ministers. RSP distributions for ministers are tax-advantaged because the Board designates the distributions as housing allowance.
  • The RSP has a streamlined fund lineup of 12 investment options. The lineup spans the investment-risk spectrum. The RSP also includes 13 target date funds, for investors who prefer an easy, single-fund investment option. Socially responsible investment options, including a fossil fuel-free global environmental fund, are available as well.

More Resources for Employers

Employers with questions about the RSP may view the RSP guide for treasurers and business administrators, contact the Board at 800-773-7752 (800-PRESPLAN), or call the Fidelity treasurer and administrator assistance line, 800-917-4369.

To mark National Retirement Security Week, October 15-21, the National Association of Government Defined Contribution Administrators (NAGDCA) offers plan sponsors a toolkit of materials, to encourage employees to save for retirement, along with tips for a healthy retirement.
