Benefits Connect Update

Enhancements to Benefits Connect make it easier and faster to enroll new members, confirm or update salary information, and terminate a member’s employment. Active members are able to update contact information, report life events, and make related benefits elections/changes online.

What does this mean for employers?

Paper forms are no longer needed for these requests. Please discard any printed forms you have and encourage members to use Benefits Connect.

Whenever a new member elects benefits online — or an active member reports a life event — through Benefits Connect, you will receive an email notification. You can then contact the member for additional information, as needed. Any corresponding adjustments to dues or coverage costs will be reflected on your next invoice.

Benefits Connect enhancements planned for 2017 include employer notification through Benefits Connect whenever a member makes changes related to benefits coverage and/or costs. In addition, you will be able to view member benefits elections and associated costs through Benefits Connect. Until then, you can view your Employer Agreement on Benefits Connect for member medical costs. Please refer to the Benefits Overviews on pensions.org for dental, supplemental death, and supplemental disability coverage costs.

Board Updates Administrative Rules

The Board of Pensions has updated its Administrative Rules to align with the structure of the Benefits Plan. The Administrative Rules, intended to be used together with the plan document to administer the Benefits Plan, have been streamlined and edited for clarity and readability. There are also fewer rules. As the plan is the governing document, only those rules that aid in administering it have been retained.

The Administrative Rules are available on pensions.org.

'Federal Reporting Requirements for Churches' Available

Federal Reporting Requirements for Churches: What You Need To Know for 2017 is available through Benefits Connect (search in Resources & Support). This publication assists in administering benefits and reporting income for ministers of the Word and Sacrament. Reporting and withholding employee income and Social Security taxes, which can be difficult tasks, are at the center of important church-related tax laws.

Help Employees Keep Retirement Savings on the Front Burner

Your employees may think they have good reasons for not saving (or not saving more) in the Retirement Savings Plan of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (RSP). The weekly budget might not stretch far enough to allow savings right now. Retirement may seem too far away to think about. Or, they may believe that pension and Social Security benefits will be enough. As you know, pension benefits may not be a part of everyone’s retirement future.

Fidelity Investments, record keeper for the RSP, offers four suggestions that you may wish to share with employees to help them find ways to save for retirement.

When talking with employees about the RSP, remember these key facts:

  • All PC(USA) employees are eligible to save in the RSP. Any employee receiving a W-2 from a PC(USA) employer may join the RSP. However, for employees who do not participate in other benefits offered by the Board, you are the only link between that employee and the RSP (the Board of Pensions does not have contact information for employees who are not in the Benefits Plan); please encourage them to participate in the RSP.
  • Tax advantages can add to retirement savings. Participants in the RSP can save the traditional pretax way and defer paying taxes now, and/or can also contribute after-tax through the Roth option in exchange for favorable tax treatment later (subject to applicable tax rules).
  • There are additional tax advantages for ministers. Distributions from the RSP for ministers are tax-advantaged because the Board designates RSP distributions as housing allowance.
  • The plan has a streamlined fund lineup of 12 investment options, spanning the investment-risk spectrum, plus 13 target date funds, for investors who prefer an easy, single-fund investment option. Socially responsible investment options, including a fossil fuel-free global environmental fund, are also available.
