The 2019 median effective salaries for ministers and employees are now available. The Board of Pensions annually sets median effective salaries based on data reported by Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) congregations and employers.
Effective salary is used in calculating employer dues and member benefits. When a member's annual effective salary is less than the median, pension credits, disability benefits, and death benefits are calculated based on the applicable median salary.
The Salaries in the Parish Ministry Salary Study will no longer be released with median effective salaries, as in years past. New data will be included in the updated Living by the Gospel, which will be released later this summer.
The Clergy Effective Salaries Compared by Congregation Size and Years of Service and the Clergy Effective Salaries Compared by Synod, both typically released each August, have been replaced by detailed breakdowns of minister salaries by gender, congregation size, and job code in the current Living by the Gospel. This data will be updated in the next release of Living by the Gospel.
Living by the Gospel is a guide to structuring calls — a comprehensive resource designed for congregations and mid councils seeking to fairly compensate ministers. The 223rd General Assembly (2018) voted unanimously to ask the Board to annually update it and distribute it to mid councils, Committees on Ministry, Committees on Preparation for Ministry, and Pastor Nominating Committees.
The Board will update Living by the Gospel each summer.
