The Board of Pensions Balanced Investment Portfolio primarily comprises the assets of the Pension Plan and Death and Disability Plan. The Board retains investment managers for each asset class in the broadly diversified Balanced Investment Portfolio, including U.S. and international stocks, bonds, and partnerships investing in private equity, natural resources, and other investments.
The investment objective of the Board of Pensions Balanced Investment Portfolio is to maximize the total return on investments while maintaining prudent levels of risk throughout diverse economic and market conditions. The long-term goal is to achieve a total return on assets that will enable the Board to maintain and increase the benefits provided to plan members.
While adhering to its fiduciary duty, the Board strives to adhere to General Assembly guidelines prohibiting investments in companies involved in military-related activities, handguns, landmines, gaming, alcohol, and tobacco. The Board has two Directors as voting members on the General Assembly Committee on Mission Responsibility Through Investment (MRTI).
In 2017, the Board significantly expanded its commitment to environmentally responsible investing through a fossil fuel-free portfolio.
